October Victim Service Foundational Academy
Attendance at the 2013 Foundational Academy will assist new victim service professionals identify and understand their roles and job responsibilities as outlined by PCCD's Consolidated Victim Service Program Standards. Join your colleagues from around the state to network and learn the basics.
Topics will include:
- The Role of the Victim Service Professional
- Orienting to the Job of Victim Assistance
- The History of Victims' Rights
- The Criminal Justice System
- The Juvenile Justice System
- Understanding the Crisis Reaction
- Listening and Supportive Counseling Skills
The Foundational Academy consists of an 18-hour three-day classroom component and a 14-hour online component for a total of 32 training hours. After registering for the Foundational Academy you will receive an email detailing the online portion of the training which you may begin at any time, but must complete within 30 days of attending the classroom component.
Training hours may be applied towards the continuing training hours required each year as put forth in the PCCD Standards and by the Center for Juvenile Justice Training and Research (CJJT&R). Participants will receive a certificate of completion upon successful completion of this course.
There is no registration fee for the Foundational Academy for individuals required to attend. Individuals not required to attend will be charged a $100 course registration fee. (Please contact Lisabeth Capozzi, to make payment arrangements.) All training materials will be provided, as well as a continental breakfast and lunch each day. Other meals will be at the participants' expense.
Who Must Attend
As mandated in the PCCD Consolidated Victim Service Program Standards the Foundational Academy is mandatory for all new staff providing the prosecutor's or chief juvenile probation officer's responsibilities under the Crime Victims Act within six months of hire.
You must attend:
- If your position is PCCD-funded through RASA and/or VOJO grants.
- If your position is VOCA-funded and you are not governed by PCADV, PCAR, MADD or NCA standards.
Rockview State Correctional Institute Tour
In coordination with the Office of the Victim Advocate, a special opportunity offered at the Foundational Academy is a tour of Rockview State Correctional Institute. This is a maximum-security facility located just minutes from the training site. The tour will start on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 3:30 p.m., and will last approximately two and a half hours with travel time. Participants are not required to attend this tour. Participants attending this tour will be credited with one and a half hours of additional training. This additional time will not count toward the required hours for the Foundational Academy.
Foundational Academy Schedule
To ensure participants receive 18 training hours during the Foundational Academy and to accommodate the SCI Tour, the start and end time will vary each day. The start and end times are listed below.
Wednesday, October 23
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.
Course: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Thursday, October 24
Course: 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
SCI Tour: 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Friday, October 25
Course: 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to the first 40 registrants. PDAI will maintain a waiting list and notify prospective students in the event an opening becomes available.
Please contact PDAI as soon as possible in the event you must cancel your course registration so that another person can attend in your place. If you cancel at the last minute (after 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22) you must cancel your hotel reservation by calling the hotel directly at (814) 231-2100. You will be invoiced for any hotel charges billed to PDAI resulting from no-show or cancellation less than 48 hours prior to scheduled arrival.
Participants have the option of sharing their overnight accommodations at no cost for the evenings of October 22-24 2013. Overnight rooms will be reserved for attendees at The Atherton Hotel. If you are willing to share a room, PDAI will make your hotel reservation; you should not contact the hotel directly to make your reservations. All reservations will be guaranteed for late arrival. Please indicate, on the registration form, the nights you require overnight accommodations and if you are willing to share a room. You are responsible for paying for incidental expenses.
Individuals who request a single room or who are not required by funding to attend will be required to make their own room reservations and pay the room rate. To make your own self-paid reservation, contact The Atherton Hotel directly by calling (814) 231-2100 and mention the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Institute. Reservations must be made by September 23, 2013.
