April Victim Service Foundational Academy

Course Information:
Attendance at the 2017 Foundational Academy will assist new victim services professionals identify and understand their roles and job responsibilities as outlined by PCCD's Consolidated Victim Service Program Standards. Join your colleagues from around the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to network and learn the basics.

Topics will include:

*The Criminal and Juvenile Justice System        *Communication Skills
*Understanding the Crisis Reaction                     *SAVIN                                            
*The Role of the Victim Service Professional      *Self-care                                      

Hours and Online Training:
The Foundational Academy consists of an 18-hour three-day classroom component and a 14-hour online component for a total of 32 training hours. The information for the online component is now available on the  PDAA website.  The online course is currently being revised and will be posted as soon as possible. You can begin at any time but must complete the online component within 6 weeks of attending the classroom component. Training hours may be applied towards the continuing training hours required each year as put forth in the PCCD Standards and by the Center for Juvenile Justice Training and Research (CJJT&R).  Participants will receive a letter of completion upon successful completion of this course.

Registration Fee:
There is no registration fee for the Foundational Academy for individuals required to attend.  For all attendees training materials will be provided, as well as breakfast and lunch each day.  Other meals will be at the participants’ expense. Travel and dinners are at the participant's expense. 

Who Must Attend:
This three day training is required for all new victim advocates within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. PDAA provides this training free of charge to participants who meet the following criteria:

The advocate works in a program that provides procedural services to victims as outlined in Pennsylvania's Crime Victims' Act and whose position is funded in whole or in part by the Rights and Services Act (RASA) or the Victims of Juvenile Offenders (VOJO) Program and you provided services to all crime victims; or

The advocate works in a victim services program that is not affiliated with the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, or NCA  and whose position is funded in whole or in part by the federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Program.

Participants will be provided overnight accommodations at no cost for Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Thursday.  Overnight rooms will be reserved for attendees at The Hyatt Place.  All reservations will be guaranteed for late arrival. Please indicate, on the registration form, the nights you require overnight accommodations. You are responsible for paying for incidental expenses and parking which is $10.00 a day.

SCI Benner Prison Tour
The Foundational Academy features a tour to a State Correctional Institute, In April, the visit will be to SCI Benner and the visit will be on Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 8:00 am to 10:30 am.  A tour bus will transport participants to the prison and there will be time to have breakfast before departure. Only the first 30 participants who sign-up can attend the tour. If interested please signify on the registration form.

Foundational Academy Schedule

To ensure participants receive 18 training hours during the Foundational Academy and to accommodate the SCI Tour, the start and end time will vary each day.  The start and end times are listed below.

Wednesday, April 19
Registration and breakfast begins at 8:00 a.m.
Course: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Thursday, April 20
Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
SCI Tour: 8:00 a..m. to 10:30 a.m.
Course: 10:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Friday, April 21
Breakfast at 7:30 a.m.
Course: 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
