PDAI Legal Resource Prosecutor Consultant

The Pennsylvania District Attorneys Institute (PDAI) is seeking a consultant to be a motivated, appellate-minded individual to serve prosecutors across the Commonwealth as a legal resource prosecutor. The successful candidate must be able to independently identify, analyze, and summarize appellate criminal caselaw and provide updates and legal guidance to the 1,000+ members of the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association and Institute.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Identify, analyze, and summarize recent appellate criminal caselaw daily
  • Communicate summaries and analysis of caselaw to the membership using PDAI’s Customer Relationship Management Software in a timely fashion
  • Review all criminal cases granted allocator by the PA Supreme Court and in consultation with the PDAA Amicus Committee and leadership determine if an amicus brief should be filed by PDAA
  • Assist with writing amicus briefs submitted on behalf of PDAA
  • Provide administrative and legal support to the PDAA Amicus Committee
  • Review all proposed amendments to the Rules of Criminal Procedure and, in consultation with PDAA leadership, draft any necessary response
  • Provide guidance to prosecutors both proactively and in response to requests for assistance, regarding applicability of case law and relevant criminal rules to trial and appellate work

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site training and assistance to individual District Attorney’s offices as requested
  • Prepare Case Law Updates to be distributed at trainings and published on the PDAA website
  • Prepare and update course and reference materials
  • Prepare Weekly Digests with legal questions and information to be distributed to PDAA membership and post responses on PDAA website forums
  • Prepare Weekly Elected Digests with legal questions and information to be distributed to all elected district attorneys
  • Attend and participate in special interest group meetings including Child Abuse Coalition, Juvenile Prosecutors Network, and Education and Training Committee
  • Create, facilitate and conduct training for prosecutors and law enforcement
  • Prepare and conduct legal presentations as requested by other organizations such as the Office of Attorney General, Pennsylvania Bar Association, and Pennsylvania Narcotics Officers Association

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association or the Supreme Court of the State
  • Member in good standing of the State Bar
  • Experience working with different District Attorneys’ offices is preferred but not required
  • Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to the above qualifications, possess one or more of the following:
    • Demonstrated a clear, concise writing style
    • Attended an instructor development training program
    • Have experience in drafting and filing appellate briefs
    • Have experience in prosecuting cases

This position is dependent upon the receipt of grant funding and the selected applicant will be required to meet any additional grant activities including assisting with quarterly program reports and tracking time.
